Abstract:
This session presents several recent studies from researchers working with Boston Public Schools and San Francisco Unified School District to address an area that has been recognized by educators at both sites as a serious concern: academic vocabulary development. Panelists will describe how they have worked with the district to help identify research needs and support district priorities. Papers include research on a multi-site implementation of a middle school vocabulary intervention, vocabulary in student writing, summer reading as a predictor of improved word learning, and what math vocabulary challenges urban teen learners. Specific findings and reflection on conducted large multi-site language and literacy research projects will be discussed.
