STUDENT: People have their right to privacy. And, yeah, I— So yeah, mostly I felt a little bad because of the international thing, and people have their right to privacy. Government has tons of other sources to get information. But I do think that peop— then when it’s really certain that— that someone is planning something, eh, the government should be able to wiretap them if they have a warrant, if they get permission from a judge. I’m not against that.
CREW [off camera]: So do you feel prepared— like, you feel like you have a real position, you understand your position? And do you feel prepared to write about it? Um, can you read me what you wrote so far? I know you just started.
STUDENT: Oh, mostly what I said already. I don’t think covert wiretapping should be illegal. People have the basic right to have their privacy and respect, notwithstanding any—
CREW: Okay. And then, um, read me that first sentence again.
STUDENT: I don’t think pe— covert wiretapping should be— Wait. I don’t think covert wi— wiretapping should be legal.
CREW: Okay, great. And then, um, do you know— do you have any idea what you’re gonna write next?
STUDENT: Yeah. Um, uh, I’m gonna write that, uh, people— I’m gonna elaborate around the— the thing of innocent until proven guilty.
CREW: Okay, mm-hm.
STUDENT: Uh, I like to be on the side of the downtrodden. [chuckles]
